it’s not diagonal navigation, it’s a classic (boxy) rollover nav with simple css, but with very bad usability

You have to see only the idea behind this because sometimes you may need something similar. And this is a good start point (with a lot of improvements needed though
ok, here’s a very quick example of the same principle, but more advanced, with better usability and speed-wise (just one image is used – better load time)
